Ex-Days Star Joins GH Cast
Soap Opera Digest, July 6, 1993
Mary Beth Evans (Ex-Kayla, DAYS OF OUR LIVES) recently made her GH debut as the mysterious Katherine Crawford who claims to be an old friend of Dominique’s. And Evans cautions that Katherine is very different from the true-blue heroine she played on DAYS. “[Katherine] has more of an agenda and some secrets,” reveals Evans, who signed a two-year contract with GH. “Kayla was pretty straightforward. I think Katherine is a little more complex. I don’t think she’s as good as Kayla was.”
Evans says she’s been negotiating with GH Supervising Producer Shelley Curtis (Curtis used to be a honcho at DAYS) for quite some time. “There was a part [on GH] a while back, but I was pregnant,” she explains. “This part came up, and they wanted me for it. I hadn’t really thought about being a ‘soap hopper’ – going from one soap to another – because Kayla was such a part of my life. But I guess they don’t have any room at the inn over there [on DAYS]. And because I love Shelley so much, I knew it would be fun on GH.”
Evans admits that she was nervous about returning to daytime. But she says Kin Shriner (Scotty), who worked with her on the short-lived soap RITUALS, has made her feel at home. “When I first showed up,” she recalls, “Kin gave me a big hug and said, ‘Hi.’ I felt very comfortable working with him.” GH Casting Director Mark Teschner says he thinks Evans “brings a real presence and charisma to the show.” Another ABC source points out that Evans, “will help fill the leading lady void” left by Samms, Garber and Elliot.
